Reducing the quantities of landfilled waste
Reducing the quantities of landfilled waste falls under Specific objective (6i1) covered by the Operational Programme Competitiveness and Cohesion. The main purpose of this specific objective is to contribute to compliance with the acquis communautaire pursuant to the obligations (Directive 1999/31/EC on the landfill of waste) for which transitional periods are envisaged for Croatia in the Accession Treaty.
This specific objective provides for the results in the integrated waste management system by stimulating separate collection of useful raw materials, treatment and utilisation of the remaining mixed waste, and adequate final disposal of the residual waste. Furthermore, under this specific objective remediation of locations highly polluted by waste (‘hot spots’) will be financed with the aim of reducing detrimental impacts of such dumpsites on the environment.
Additional results that are expected to be realised include finding an adequate method (in accordance with the acquis communautaire) of management of special waste streams and hazardous waste (e.g. medical waste, tyres, construction waste, etc.), as well as establishing the central waste monitoring system that will produce direct and reliable information about all waste streams.
Examples of activities that can be financed through Specific objective 6i1 can be found here.
