Co-financing agreements presented to Waste Management Centres Orlovnjak and Šagulje

30.10.2024.

The co-financing agreements worth in total 788 thousand euros were officially handed over today to the representatives of the waste management centres Orlovnjak and Šagulje by the state secretary at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition Anja Bagarić, and the director of the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund Luka Balen.

The granted funds will be used for the preparation of the remaining study and project documentation necessary for further implementation of these projects, as well as for their application for EU co-financing under the new operational program.

In accordance with EU directives, and the goals set in national strategic documents, Croatia, is building the waste management system based on a high level of prevention and separate collection, and utilisation of valuable properties of waste. Also, the waste that remains after that and that can no longer be used must be disposed of in waste management centres in a quality manner, and in accordance with environmental standards.

"So far, 4 waste management centres have been built, while the rest are either in one of the implementation or design phases. The construction of such facilities is a complex project that counties and cities cannot implement on their own, without the help of the state. That is why the Government of the Republic of Croatia has so far provided about 320 million euros from both national and EU funds for WMC projects," said the director of FZOEU Balen.

State Secretary Anja Bagarić pointed out that this was only part of the projects improving sustainable and modern waste management.

"This Government and the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition are doing everything to achieve the planned goals as soon as possible and ensure that our environment remains thriving and healthy. The centres for which contracts have been awarded today will meet the needs of several counties, which will ensure optimal waste management for more than 750 thousand citizens. These are investments that really create the foundations for a green future, so I wish everyone a successful and quick implementation of projects", concluded state secretary Bagarić.
