“The quantity of waste is increasing year-on-year and indicating the need to implement projects like this one, and also that it is essential to continue raising the awareness of the citizens and education about the importance of environmental protection. I would like to see less need for these types of actions in the future, and instead to see them replaced with diving instructions where the people could simply observe and admire the beauty of our Adriatic Sea,” said Director of the Fund Siniša Kukić.
The action was endorsed by Tomislav Ćorić, the minister of economy and sustainable development, who participated in the opening ceremony and joined the divers in the clean-up.
Both the Slovenian and the Croatian sides were cleaned in the action, with the divers removing bulk waste in front of Piran, the Port of Piran, in Savudrija, the Veli Jože Camp, and the Port of Savudrija. The children, members of the divers’ eco-patrol, were also involved, and during the two days they helped clean the seaside while learning how to foster better attitudes towards the sea in the future. “The environment has no borders. In order to have integrated environmental protection, all stakeholders from all bordering countries have to be involved,” said Mario Šiljeg, the state secretary at the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development.
The main goal of the action is to clean the underwater and draw attention to the global problem of pollution of the seas, and to raise the awareness of the citizens about the importance of preserving the Adriatic flora and fauna, i.e. the necessity to connect all the generations and the neighbouring countries with the same goal of protecting the environment and preserving the natural beauty of the Adriatic Sea.
The action wasorganised by the: Agency Promocija ronjenja, the Divers’ Club Nemo-Adriatic of the Croatian Disabled Homeland War Veterans'Association, the Zagreb Holding and its branch Vladimir Nazor, the Piran Volunteer Fire Brigade, and the Speleological Association of Slovenia.
This project is co-financed from the resources of the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund under the call for co-financing environmental projects implemented by the civil society organisations.
