Earth Day

22.04.2021.

“Restore Our Earth” is this year’s Earth Day motto promoted around the world to mark its 51st anniversary.

Scientists are warning that changes are happening so rapidly than many plants and animals have a hard time in adapting to them. If average temperatures globally continue to grow uncontrollably, many plant and animal species will face a higher risk of extinction.

This year’s celebration of Earth Day is focused on increasing the diversity, education and activities to protect the environment, which involves five pillars for restoring Planet Earth: the canopy project (planting trees); the great global clean up; improving climate literacy (education in schools); the global Earth challenge encouraging individuals to contribute to collecting the data on environmental pollution in their communities; and food impact on the environment.

Through different educational campaigns and eco-actions, the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund is trying to contribute to raising public awareness and adopting environmentally friendly habits in their everyday life. In our brochures you yan find useful advice and inspiration to take “baby steps that can lead to great changes”.

The idea to honour the Earth was first introduced in 1969, but officially it has been marked since 1992, when at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro a long-term program for promoting sustainable development was coordinated. In 2009, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 22 April as International Mother Earth Day, which was marked for the first time on 22 April 1970 in universities across the USA. Today it is marked in 190 countries, and in Croatia since 1990.
