23.10.2019.

In cooperation of the Environmental Protection and energy Efficiency Fund and the Korea Business Centre (KOTRA), the seminar on Waste Management in Korea was held today in Zagreb.

The representatives of counties, towns and municipalities, directors and representatives of WMCs, as well as of utility and other companies interested in this subject attended the event.

Deputy Director of the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund, Alenka Košiša Čičin-Šain, pointed out in her welcome speech that Croatia, as well as other EU Member States, had set very ambitious goals regarding environmental protection, primarily through a circular economy, and sustainable waste management. “The EU wishes to be at the forefront of the fight to prevent climate change, and we wish to contribute to these efforts. In this sense, Korean experiences can help us, and we can apply the best and efficient ideas in Croatia.”

The partners and participants in the seminar were also welcomed by Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Republic of Croatia, H.E. Dong-chan Kim, and State Secretary at the Ministry of Environment and Energy, Mr. Mile Horvat.

During the seminar, an overview of the overall waste management system in the Republic of Korea was presented, including the relevant legislative framework governing waste management. In-Ok Kang, the president of the Management of HOJA Organisation, explained all components of the system, pointing out that food waste was one of the greatest challenges in waste management. She presented to the participants the legislation related to food waste and its proper sorting, which enabled the Republic of Korea to become the global leader in waste management.

After the seminar, all interested participants had the opportunity to personally exchange experiences with their Korean counterparts.
