At the initiative of the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund, utility companies from across Croatia joined the action of collecting waste in the areas struck by the earthquake, and will help their colleagues in SIsak-Moslavina County with their equipment and manpower.

The mayor of Poreč, Loris Peršurić, today handed over to the director of the company Gospodarenje otpadom Sisak Katarina Luketić municipal vehicles that will help them carry out daily work in these difficult conditions. “We are well equipped and staffed in Poreč because our workload increased during the tourist season. There are currently fewer tourists because of the coronavirus situation, so we can temporarily lend some of our equipment to utility companies that need this help at the moment. For the time being, in Sisak we distributed two trucks with loaders, four containers and assigned four employees for a minimum of two months, or longer if necessary,” said the mayor of Poreč during the event of handing over the vehicles, attended by Siniša Kukić, the director of the Fund, and the mayor of Sisak, Kristina Ikić Baniček.

Aleksandra Čilić, the head of the Environmental Protection Sector at the Fund, said that the Fund had been contacted by other utility companies wishing to help in the earthquake damage clean-up. “Municipal equipment has been provided by utility companies from Zagreb, Osijek, Koprivnica and Čazma, and today I have talked with the directors of utility companies in Zadar and Dubrovnik who will also send equipment and workers. In addition, the manufacturers and dealers of municipal equipment also joined the action making available some of their supplies,” said Mrs Čilić. She also commended the solidarity that the people demonstrated and the help provided in Sisak, Petrinja and Glina, and the surrounding areas. She invited other utility companies to join this action in as many numbers as possible.

Katarina Luketić, the director of the utility company Gospodarenje otpadom Sisak, expressed gratitude for this admirable donation, and pointed out that the company’s workers were in the field every day, clearing the damage and collecting construction and other waste resulting from the earthquake. Additional support will be provided by the containers for separate waste collection, which should be supplied by the Fund soon.
All the activities the Fund is implementing on site are part of the measures in the Plan for the implementation of waste management measures in Sisak-Moslavina County following the earthquake adopted by the Ministry of Energy and Sustainable Development. For their implementation, the Fund has allocated HRK 50 million that will be used to finance the collection, transport, separation and treatment of waste, and to purchase the necessary equipment. In line with the circular economy, the tendency is to utilise as many as possible valuable properties of waste, meaning separately collecting construction waste, EE waste, tyres, furniture and other bulky waste, textile waste, and hazardous waste from households, so that it can be forwarded for further treatment.

“We all hope that this process will not take long, and that very soon the first steps to revitalize this area will be made,” said head of the Sector Čilić, and added that the Fund’s employees were in the field and would be at disposal for as long as required.
