Machines worth EUR 2.6 million financed by the Fund handed over to Komunalac

In Mala Gorica near Petrinja, 3 machines worth 1.1 million euros, fully financed by the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund, were handed over to the Petrinja utility company Komunalac. This is the second delivery after Komunalac took over 5 machines worth 1.5 million euros at the end of July as part of a construction waste disposal project with a total budget of 11.5 million euros.

After the earthquake and with the support of the Croatian Government, the Fund provided financing to Petrinja for the purchase of machinery, space, and manpower, so that all construction waste resulting from the demolition of shattered buildings could be recycled or disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. A provisional construction waste storage was set up in Mala Gorica, where the material is brought every day and sorted by type of material and waste and, with the help of new machines, processed in an appropriate way.

The head of the Fund's Environmental Protection Sector, Aleksandra Čilić, pointed out that all material that was brought in was recycled, contributing to Croatia’s waste management goals and the establishment of a circular economy. "The current temporary landfill, and the future civic amenity site, will be equipped with the necessary machines, after which Komunalac will assume all the work related to the processing of materials at the end of the year. These are huge amounts of waste, which, if not managed, would end up in dumpsites and in this way, we have built an efficient system," says Čilić.
The director of Komunalac Petrinja, Željko Tonković, explained that in addition to machines, the Fund’s resources were also used to finance the fitting out of the storage space and the cost of labour. "In July, three excavators were delivered, two crawlers and two loaders with a capacity of 3.2 and 4.2 cubic meters respectively. Today we received a crusher, a separator and a conveyor belt," said Tonković and announced the delivery of a tractor, a trailer truck to transport the machines, a bulky waste crusher, and a compactor for waste disposal at the landfill.

The mayor of Petrinja, Magdalena Komes, once again thanked everyone involved in this project emphasising that construction waste from the entire Sisak-Moslavina County were disposed of there, which required significant engagement.
