Remediation of landfills Grginac and Čret completed

The representatives of the Fund were present at the event to mark the completion of remediation of landfills “Grginac” in Veliko Trojstvo and “Čret” in Novi Marof. Remediation works on these landfills were mainly co-financed from the European Cohesion Fund, while part of the finances was provided by the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency  Fund. The remediation of Grginac cost HRK 12.5 million, while the total investment for the remediation of Čret amounted to HRK 17.5 million.
 
“This a large investment and we are glad that with 8.2 million kunas of EU grant, which is 85%, we managed to close the landfill where over two decades around 178 thousand tonnes of waste was disposed. To close the financial construction for remediation, the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency  Fund contributed one million kunas, and the rest was provided by Municipality Veliko Trojstvo and the town of Bjelovar,” said Maja Feketić, the head of the Sector at the Fund, during the event to mark the completion of works on Grginac, together with her colleague Alenka Košiša Čičin-Šain, the deputy director of the Fund.
 
Remediation works on landfill “Grginac” included the construction of the bottom, liner remediation of the surrounding terrain, the leachate drainage system, transfer of old waste, installation and forming of the slope of the waste body, works on the boundary channel and stormwater drainage, works on the cover and degassing systems, fencing and finishing works. After the execution of all works, the area of 2.2 ha was revitalised, and one landfill was permanently closed.
 
An even higher of amount of HRK 17.5 million of EU funding was successfully withdrawn for the remediation of landfill “Čret”. The event to mark the completion of works was attended by Iva Jandriček, the head of the Department for Support to Final Beneficiaries in Project Preparation at the Fund.
 
Nataša Tramišak, the minister of regional development and EU funds, pointed out that in accordance with the European Green Agenda and the Green Deal, investments in environmental projects will be stepped up. “We are expecting new calls, new projects, and even better waste management in Croatia, especially in the period from 2021 to 2027,” said Tramišak.
